How I calculate values If any one is curious.
How I define things:
Full Size this is obviously a full size product.
Travel size if a box sends a full size travel sized product I make a totally subjective decision if I want to call it a full size or not. Like travel size mascara I call bullshit and its a deluxe sample, a travel size pack of wipe this gets full size why who the hell knows.
Deluxe Sample I call it a deluxe sample if it half the size of the full sized product so if I get a 0.5 oz foundation and full size is 1 oz you get a labeled as deluxe sample you go Glen Coco. Sometimes if it is a really large product or a particularly expensive like eye cream or something I will let 1/3 size be a deluxe sample so like if I get 1 g of a 3 gram $50 eye cream or 10 oz of a 30 oz body wash that will also get a deluxe sample.
Sample any other size of product.
Total is the sum total of the actual value of products I received.
Random Other Details
- When I can I will always use metric measurements they make more sense and the scientist in me just likes them better
- I do not factor in shipping or tax because that won’t be the same every where
- I always use the lowest price I can find even if that is a sale value that may not stick around, don’t we all like to look for the best deal
- As much as I’d love to and that is the fantasy goal I do not make money on this and I do not have any affiliate links. Maybe one day. You’ll see disclaimers if that ever happens.
Value Formulas
Example product situation there is a full size eyeshadow single that is $12 dollars and 2g.
price ÷ size = price per gram
$12/2g = $6 per gram
Now lets say I get a 0.4 g sample of this eyeshadow. I want to know the exact value of that product.
(price per gram) * (size of sample) = Sample Value
$6/g * 0.4g = $2.40
Valuing a palette I will do two ways price per shade and price per gram.
Price per shade
price ÷ (number of shades) = price per shade
Price per gram
price ÷ (total weight of palette) = price per gram
So a 10 shade palette with 20 g of product that costs 30 dollars breaks down to
$30/10 = $3 a shade
$30/20g = $1.50 per gram
Rounding Scheme
Since this is money we are talking about I am using a rounding scheme that is most appropriate to US currency. Examples:
- $4.3457 will get rounded to $4.35 Anything 5 and higher in the thousandths place will round the number up
- $4.3444 would get truncated in between the hundredths and thousandths place and become $4.34 as is standard for pricing.
And now you know how the nerd does the math.
